Hidden away amongst the trees in a quiet corner of Cambridgeshire, our Garden Studio is an essay in considered and understated architectural design. The proportions were calculated to reflect and accommodate a simple and solid piece of furniture: a workbench, passed down to the homeowner through the generations. And the vernacular was stripped back to bear the same favourable associations with honest materials and meticulous craftsmanship.
High-quality timber cladding cocoons the exterior from all directions, acting as a continuous rainscreen capable of protecting its inhabitants from the elements. Beneath this sits a soft rubber membrane, providing exceptional standards of insulation to maximise the potential savings from the newly installed heat pump. While a bipartite layout accommodates its dual purpose as a home office and a model-making workshop to a superlative degree.
The interior lends its design to the designer-occupant’s questions concerning function and form; the crisp white of the pegboard walls providing both a useful storage space for tools and construction equipment and a welcome contrast to the warmer tones of the pine shelving, the hardwood desk, and the stained wooden workbench itself.
